The ritual of the Miriam’s Cup has become an established part of many liberal seders. Representing the joy and life-giving qualities of Miriam’s well in the Torah, it celebrates both her life and the strength of the other women in the Pesach story. As we are told in the Talmud: “If it wasn’t for the righteousness of women of that generation we would not have been redeemed from Egypt” (Babylonian Talmud, Sotah 9b).
There are many different rituals involving Miriam’s Cup, and there are no fixed rules about how to use it. Most involve a communal filling of the cup with water to symbolize inclusivity, reminding us that it is up to all of us to honor the women in the Pesach story!
